Propshield Retail is a unique formulation of lanolin derivatives and non-toxic chemicals designed to prevent & limit barnacle encrustation, oxidisation and electrolysis on all types of stern gear. Propshield is suitable for propellers, prop shafts, rudders, P & A brackets, trim tabs, outdrives and outboards; and compatible with bronze, stainless steel, aluminium, Zytel (Kiwi props) and painted surfaces.
What is Propshield? Propshield Antifouling Grease is fast becoming known throughout the maritime world as the market leader in stern gear and propeller antifouling. Our product is undoubtedly the best value propeller antifouling on the market to date, and is the only widely available product which actively protects your stern gear in the most foul of waters guaranteed! Get on board with the Propshield experience and you wont want to get back off! What makes Propshield so special? Propshield uses lanolin derivatives combined with a special combination of corrosion inhibitors and other non toxic chemicals which together provide protection from corrosion and prevent hard growth on all types of stern gear. Since boats have had propellers, mariners have been trying to find ways of stopping barnacles sticking to them without very much success. We have manufactured this new affordable product that significantly reduces/stops the adhesion of these creatures and significantly reduces/stops the effects of electrolysis and oxidisation as well. The reason the barnacles can’t grow on your propellers is that Propshield is so slippery that they are unable to attach to the metal (or painted) surface; when the vessel moves through the water any barnacles that have managed to adhere themselves are swept away. The product cannot be dissolved in water and even when the surface film degenerates over time the metal retains it within its pores, and so remains active. As mentioned this product also helps to eliminate or at least reduce the effects of electrolysis so it stops your propellers dissolving into the water when your shore power is connected. If your propellers are green at the end of the season this is a sure sign that the copper is leaching out of the bronze through galvanic action. This weakens the metal and blades can sometimes break off and penetrate the hull. At best the blade will loose efficiency and your fuel bills will increase as your vessel's top speed falls. For further information on Propshield visit our Product, Benefits and Application pages. Renewable resources ApplicationThere are two methods to choose from when applying Propshield Antifouling Grease, Method A and Method B. For both Methods application is preferable on a warm day above 15°C if possible, if the temperature is lower than this warm Propshield up in a bucket/tub of hot water until malleable or store at room temperature (circa 20°C) prior to use.
Coverage and Reapplication Guide One 375g pot of Propshield is sufficient to treat a 12 metre (40ft) boat twice (coating only the props and shafts) so effectively you only pay half the RRP per year. If you treat the props, shafts rudders and trim tabs then one pot will only be sufficient for a 12 metre (40ft) vessel once. Alternatively one pot will cover two outdrive legs below the water line on a 10 metre (33ft) boat. Single screw craft and smaller vessels will have enough PROPSHIELD for two or more seasons. If the vessel is in commission for 6-7 months one application is normally sufficient; this depends on local conditions and you may need to coat more frequently. If in commission for 12 months reapply more frequently, again depending on local conditions. We cannot give precise guidelines as each locality has different fouling problems. We would advise Propshield users to follow the initial guidelines and adapt these to suit locality. Application - Method ASuitable for all metal surfaces including bronze, stainless steel and aluminium and is applied using heat as a penetration catalyst (Further application photos can be seen here). WARNINGS: Please click here to be redirected to prop-shield-usa.com for a step by step example / guide detailing Propshield being applied to a bronze propeller. Application - Method BSuitable for painted surfaces as well as all metal surfaces and is applied using white spirit (mineral spirits or Turpentine) as a penetration catalyst (Further application photos can be seen here). Please click here to be redirected to prop-shield-usa.com for a step by step example / guide detailing Propshield being applied to a bronze propeller. Figure 1 - This propeller has had about seven months use and hasn’t been treated with Propshield and shows a typical level of encrustation attack and oxidised surface. Figure 2 - This propeller was coated with Propshield and also had average use during a seven month season. The result was startling; virtually no barnacles in the working area of the prop and it looked virtually the same as at the beginning of the season. The treated blade had 24 barnacles and we estimate that the untreated blade had in the order of 500 barnacles! #2 Duo Props without Propshield

Propshield Industrial is suitable for:
Product OperationHow it works Propshield Industrial has a lanolin base, a substance long used by mariners for prevention of fouling, however combine this with a special combination of corrosion inhibitors and other chemicals an age old remedy is transformed into a modern day solution tough enough to endure hard labour day in day out in the toughest of climes and in the foulest of waters. Propshield Industrial bonds to the metal surface of a propeller in a simple 2 coat application process. Once applied it ensures a surface is so slippery that barnacles and hard growth are unable to securely attach to its metal surface, oxidisation and electrolysis are also nullified. Important: Propshield is no substitute for a good bonding system, the product will work in conjunction with anodes to eradicate electrolysis. As with all antifouling products Propshield Industrial performs at its best when a vessel is used regularly; the more a vessel is used the more barnacles and hard growth are thrown off from the force created by the rotating propeller and the lack of adhesion caused by the Propshield coating. Propshield Industrial will also perform well even if a vessel is inactive for long periods of time. If a vessel has seen extended inactivity simply take to sea and run at full speed for approximately 60 minutes and most of the barnacles and hard growth that have adhered to the props will be thrown off. Unable to be dissolved in water the Propshield coating slowly degenerates over time leaving a transparent bonded film retained in the very pores of the metal ensuring the product remains active for long periods of up to 18 months. Click here for details on product application.
2nd Bonding Coat After the Primary sub layer of the 2nd bonding coat has finished its active life it will fall away to reveal the much harder secondary sub layer of the 2nd bonding coat, this transition from primary to secondary sub layer is known as "shedding". Shedding can occur gradually over a few weeks or all at once depending on various factors such as vessel usage, local sea variables and ambient temperature during application. Regardless of the time span the primary sub layer will only "shed" itself once the secondary sub layer is hard enough to begin its active role in protecting the propeller surface. It is also important to note that any barnacles, hard growth or weed growth that has attached itself to the propeller during the initial 1 to 4 weeks will be ejected from the propeller along with the primary sub layer during shedding. Once the secondary sub layer becomes active it will have achieved its optimum solidity for protecting the 1st bonding coat and the metal of the propeller beneath. During the lifespan of the secondary layer, approximately 5 to 6 months, the surface will become totally transparent resembling the 1st bonding coat during application. It is prudent to point out at this stage that some observers will take this transparency to mean that the product has been washed away and the prop is no longer protected, this couldn't be further from the truth as in fact the product has only reached about a quarter of its active life. 1st Bonding Coat If a vessel is not able to be hauled out/dry docked once Propshield has run its active life it is prudent to point out that at this time propellers will be in excellent condition to continue active duty for a lengthy period due to the protection Propshield has provided for up to 18 months previously. For instance if a prop usually needed to be cleaned after 1 year of service then after Propshield had been used a prop would only need to be cleaned after 2 and half years of service. ApplicationPropshield Industrial is applied in a quick and easy 2 coat bonding process. Unlike the retail grease version Propshield Industrial comes in the form of an easily applied paste enabling large surface areas to be coated in minutes. The principal application process is as follows: 0. Surface Preparation
2. Second Coat The second coat can now be applied. Using a suitable sized brush, or a soft bristled broom for larger propellers, a second much thicker coating of Propshield is brushed on top of the first transparent coat, see figure 1.5 below. This second coat needs to be thick enough so the metal underneath is no longer visible, see figure 1.6 below. The coating doesn't need to be uniform in thickness however if appearance is important then a blowtorch/lamp or heatgun can be used to quickly skim over the surface to produce a pleasing even gloss finish to the coating (see figure 1.7 below).
3. Bonding & Launch The coatings are now left to bond to the metal surface and to each other for approximately 1 to 3 days depending on ambient temperature. The vessel can then be launched. ![]() SpecificationPropshield Industrial is a paste and comes in 5 available sizes, 2.75, 5.5, 10, 30 and 60 Litre Kegs/Barrels. Please see our coverage table for information on propeller sizes and the number that each keg/barrel can treat.

Renewable resources ![]() Rigging Guard Retail (Topside Corrosion Control)
Rigging Guard is an extremely versatile product suitable for use on all metal rigging, anchors, chains, cable, wire rope, winches, standing rigging plus metal hawse pipes, window frames, guard wire fittings, wiper arms and spindles, decorative bronze and copper and other corrosion prone surfaces.
Product Operation & InformationRigging Guard is an Anti Corrosion Wax comprising of a special blend of waxes, oils and greases which prevents rust, corrosion, oxidisation and verdigris (green deposits) on all types of metals including: all metal rigging, anchors, chains, cable, wire rope, winches, standing rigging plus metal hawse pipes, window frames, guard wire fittings, wiper arms and spindles, decorative bronze and copper etc. Whilst Rigging Guard is aimed primarily at Yachts it’s an extremely versatile product and will also be beneficial to small ships, workboats, motor boats and small scale architectural rigging found on bridges, walkways and buildings (for larger comercial solutions to corrosion control please see ACW Coatings). Insurance companies are now insisting on better maintenance of standing rigging so it makes sense to use a product such as this to help limit maintenance and replacement cost of expensive gear. Rigging Guard will ensure rust prone fittings, cables, anchor chains etc remain in pristine condition. It will also aid the free running of windlasses on the foredeck and will reduce the effort of hauling in the anchor. This is especially helpful if you have an electric winch as it will take less current to lift the anchor if it is free running thereby making your battery last longer and takes the strain off the motor. Rigging Guard prevents corrosion on all types of metal including decorative copper and brass. Just a thin smear will banish oxidisation for up to a year. The best thing is it simply wipes off with white spirit so no more trying to remove varnish from your brass clock. A quick re polish and an application of Rigging Guard will see your bright work protected. Clearly Rigging Guard will help prevent dismasting as a lot of these situations are caused by lack of maintenance. It is not a substitute for regular inspections and replacement where necessary but it will cut the amount of down time and the costs of replacement parts will be significantly reduced. ApplicationRigging Guard can be applied to anywhere corrosion is present above the water line and is compatible with all metals surfaces. Only a thin transparent coating which can be brushed on in seconds is required for long lasting protection up to a year and it is weather, salt and fresh water resistant. Rigging Guard can be used at any time of the year and is also very beneficial if you are going to lay up a vessel for a while as it is effectively a mothballing compound if applied more thickly. Normally you would simply brush the product onto wires and fittings to protect them and that’s it job done. Rigging Guard can even treat inside the captive ends of cable, wires and fittings, the product can be diluted and drip fed into the sealed component. Application Process: Step 2. Application: Brush on a thin almost invisible coating with a brush. Further coats can be applied for prolonged protection or winterisation. Work into crevices. Through hull fittings, bolts & other corrosion prone surfaces inside/outside of the vessel - apply liberally or as desired. Surfaces in contact with sails/sheets – rub brushed coat well in with rag and reapply more frequently. SpecificationTwo retail sizes are available 0.25 and 0.5 Litres. Rigging Guard is suitable for Yachts, Motor Cruisers and Sailboats and small scale architectural rigging. (Please note the 0.25L will be available in 2009 TBA). Coverage Guide: 0.25 Litre - coats 165 fittings plus 55m (180ft) of standing rigging/cable. (Each size will last 2 to 6 seasons depending on size of vessel etc, figures are approximate)
Demonstration PhotosFigures 1 & 2 below represent rust & corrosion at their worst. Aesthetics are ruined & the integrity of an object, which in most cases are relied upon for one’s very life, can be damaged beyond repair. Preventing corrosion on metals can help prevent failure of critical systems such as anchors, winches, standing rigging & fittings etc. Rigging Guard will help prevent dismasting & will provide sailors with greater confidence in their equipment. Transform rusty and corrosion prone rigging from this:
To this: Fig 3Figure 3 above shows the protective power of Rigging Guard, a piece of mild steel which corrodes far quicker than other metals was submersed in salt water for a few months. The area coated with Rigging Guard on the left was completely rust free whilst the untreated part on the right was covered in rust. This simple test in extreme conditions far beyond suggested usage demonstrates how powerful Rigging Guard is in preventing corrosion. Rigging Maintenance Guide
As you will see from the Independent Links, maintenance of your standing rigging is essential to prevent dismasting. Your life depends on having a rig that is durable and above all reliable in all weathers not just on sunny days. Whilst your rigging may look superficially OK rust is eating away at the inside of your fittings. Even slight rust marks are a tell tale that all is not well and you should investigate problems as soon as they emerge. We are not trying to be scare mongers but are merely trying to educate the sailing world to the potential risks of not maintaining the standing rig. Rigging is not fit and forget but needs constant attention to keep it fit for purpose. Your life may depend upon it. Insurance companies are now starting to recognise these potential problems and are starting to insist on regular inspections and maintenance. Can you convince them that you have a regular maintenance schedule? Ask yourself these questions? SpecificationsPLEASE NOTE: The Prop Protector is NOT designed to be used with outboard engines, stern drive engines or Saildrives. Diagrams are not to scale and the gaps shown are exaggerated for clarity. Click here for Technical Specification Table The Slide-On Prop Protector Manufactured in one piece with a width of only 12mm (0.47"), it is designed for installations where the gap between the propeller and the shaft bearing is small. A gap of 18mm (0.7") is sufficient; this includes 6mm (1/4") of space for water to circulate to the shaft bearing. This type is available for shafts of 20mm (3/4") dia. up to 50mm (2 "). It simply slides onto the shaft after the propeller has been removed and is secured with a set screw that locates into a small drill dimple made in the shaft. The Clamp-On Prop Protector Supplied as an assembly that is split into two halves along the longitudinal axis so that it can be installed on the shaft without removing the propeller. The width is 17mm (0.67"). A gap of 23mm (0.9") is sufficient; this includes 6mm (1/4") of space for water to circulate to the shaft bearing. It is clamped onto the shaft by two Allen screws and is also fixed by a set screw that locates into a small drill dimple made in the shaft. This type is available for shafts of 20mm (3/4") dia. up to 40mm (1 5/8"). Medium Size: Manufactured and fitted as the Standard, the width is the same, the only difference is the blade diameter that is 105mm (4.13"). This type is available for shafts of 1 3/4" dia. & 2" and 45mm & 50mm. Special: As above but with a larger blade diameter of 127mm (5"), for vessels with extra-large stern bearings and big propeller hubs. Large Size: Manufactured and fitted as above, these large cutters have a width of 22mm (0.87") . A gap of 32mm (1.26") is sufficient; this includes 10mm (0.39") of space for water to circulate to the shaft bearing. Extra Large Size: For vessels that are built with large struts or stern bearings. They are fitted in the same way as other Clamp-On units and have a width of 30mm (1.18"). A gap of 42mm (1.65") is sufficient; this includes 12mm (0.47") of space for water to circulate to the shaft bearing. Cutters in the range 65mm (2 3/4") to 130mm (5") are for use on large vessels such as trawlers, fishing boats, harbour patrol boats, luxury yachts and cruisers. These cutters have a width of 33mm (1.3"). Not all cutters in this range are held in stock. ALL EXTRA LARGE CUTTERS ARE SUPPLIED WITH SELF LOCKING FASTENERS AS STANDARD. PLEASE CONTACT US FOR SHAFT SIZES OVER 100mm (4")
In most installations, the gap between the propeller hub and the shaft bearing is wide enough to allow the installation of a Prop Protector. This gap must be sufficiently wide to accomodate the cutter plus an additional gap of 6mm (1/4 inch) between the Protector and the bearing. Extra Large cutters need a gap of approximately 12mm (1/2 inch). This extra gap is necessary to allow water to circulate to the shaft bearing for cooling and lubrication. It also allows for any end float on the prop shaft. If there is excessive end float due to gearbox end play or over-flexible engine mounts, this extra movement has to be provided for. The recommended gaps for all types of Prop Protector are shown in the specifications. If the gap on your shaft is inadequate, it can be increased by any of the following methods: 1. For adjustments of between 2mm (0.08 inch) and 5mm (0.2 inch), it may be possible to disconnect the prop shaft from the prop shaft coupling, move the shaft aft by the required amount and re-tighten the connection. If this method is used it is important to ensure that there is still suficient engagement between the shaft and coupling to maintain a secure connection under full power. 2. For larger adjustments, a coupling spacer or a flexible coupling may be fitted between the coupling and the gearbox flange. We can now supply coupling spacers for most of the popular gearboxes 'off the shelf'. See order page for further details. We can also arrange for the supply of spacers for gearboxes not listed. Please allow three weeks for delivery and supply full details of your engine and gearbox. Underwater Installation One of the unique features of the Prop Protectors is that they can be installed with the vessel afloat. However, the thread-locking compound supplied with each cutter to secure the fastenings is intended for use only with the vessel out of the water; the compound will not cure underwater. Owners wishing to carry out underwater installation should not use the fastenings or the thread-locking compound supplied, but should order the special self-locking fastenings we supply for this purpose and which are described below: For all Slide-On cutters from 19mm (3/4 inch) to 50mm (2 inch) diameter shafts a single set screw is required per cutter. For all Clamp-On standard, medium and large cutters for shafts 19mm (3/4inch) to 62mm (2 1/2inch) diameter, one set screw and two cap screws are required per cutter. For all Clamp-On extra large cutters for shafts 37mm (1 1/2 inches) to 100mm (4 inches) diameter, a similar but larger set of fastenings is required per cutter. These fastenings have been fitted with a plastic insert which serves as a self-locking mechanism and can be re-used up to five times. Independent ReviewsMotor Boat Monthly: Comprehensive Review DEC 2008 Sailing Today: Could You Fit a Rope Cutter? FAQ(Frequently asked questions) Q1. How much space is required on the shaft for a PROP PROTECTOR? A1. The SLIDE-ON type requires a gap on the shaft of 18mm (0.7") and the CLAMP-ON a gap of 23mm (0.9"). These dimensions include a 6mm (0.25") of space on the shaft to allow water to circulate to the cutless bearing. Q2. How long does it take to install the PROP PROTECTOR? A2. The Clamp-On version can be fitted in approximatly 10 minutes as the propeller does NOT need to be removed. TheSlide-On version would take between 30 minutes and one hour as the propeller MUST be removed before fitting. Q3. Will I need to buy new bearings for the PROP PROTECTOR every two years or so as with other cutters? A3. No. PROP PROTECTORS have no moving parts and require no bearings. Q4. Will I have to install zincs for the PROP PROTECTOR? A4. No. The zinc usually installed on the propeller shaft will also protect the PROP PROTECTOR. Q5. Will the PROP PROTECTOR corrode? A5. No. PROP PROTECTORS are made of high grade 316 stainless steel and will never corrode. Q6. Will I have to send my PROP PROTECTOR to the manufacturer for sharpening as with other shaft drive cutters? A6. In the unlikely event that your Prop Protector requires sharpening, this can be easily done by you with a ceramic sharpening stone or a metal file. Q7. Will my PROP PROTECTOR break on sun-hardened rope as some "chopping" style cutters tend to do? A7. No, your PROP PROTECTOR will continue cutting while the shaft is turning. Q8. Will my PROP PROTECTOR affect hull speed to a measurable degree? A8. For vessels cruising at 25 knots or less the affect on boat speed is negligible. For high speed vessels at above 35 knots, RPM may have to be increased by about 10%. Q9. Will my PROP PROTECTOR make a noise when the shaft is turning as some "chopping" style cutters do? A9. No. PROP PROTECTORS are completely silent in operation. Q10. How long has PROP PROTECTOR been on the market? A10. PROP PROTECTOR has been selling in Europe since 1992, and the USA since 1995. Over 13,000 are presently in use. |
